About the Consortium of New York Geriatric Education Centers

What is the Consortium of New York Geriatric Education Centers (CNYGEC)?

The CNYGEC is an affiliation of education institutions specializing in geriatric and gerontology. We are located at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center, GRECC.  Our partners include:

Our Mission

The CNYGEC offers specialized training in geriatrics and geriatric mental health is essential to meet the health care and educational demands of the growing population of elders.  It is also important that the current and future workforce understand the diversity of the older population (e.g., ethnicity, race, geography, income, language ability) and be prepared to work on interprofessional teams in a range of clinical settings (e.g., nursing homes, assisted living facilities, hospitals).

The CNYGEC, through a multi- faceted, competency-based clinically oriented training, drawing on the alliances of our CNYGEC partners, provide interprofessional training of health professionals, students, and faculty throughout New York State.  We train health care professionals in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of acute, chronic and life threatening diseases, disabilities and other health problems of older New Yorkers. We also seek to give resources and support of the caregivers.

Our History

The CNYGEC was founded in 1997 when two New York City Geriatric Education Centers combined – the Columbia University-New York GEC and the Hunter-Mount Sinai GEC. It was decided that the five partner institutions – Columbia, New York University, Mount Sinai, Hunter College, and Beth Abraham – would each contribute unique resources in geriatrics and gerontology to the consortium. CNYGEC was consistently funded by the Health Services and Resources Administration of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services until 2015. Although CNYGEC no longer receives federal funding, we provide a clearinghouse for education and training in geriatrics and gerontology.
